How to Measure Correctly
Waist Measurement:
- Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart
- Locate the narrowest part of your torso (usually just above navel)
- Wrap measuring tape around this point
- Keep tape parallel to the floor
- Take measurement after a normal exhale
Hip Measurement:
- Stand with feet together
- Find the widest part of your hips/buttocks
- Wrap measuring tape around this point
- Keep tape parallel to the floor
- Don't pull tape too tight
Healthy Ranges
Men:
Low Risk:< 0.85
Moderate Risk:0.85 - 0.90
High Risk:> 0.90
Women:
Low Risk:< 0.75
Moderate Risk:0.75 - 0.80
High Risk:> 0.80
Health Significance
Waist-to-hip ratio indicates body fat distribution and associated health risks:
- Higher ratios indicate more abdominal fat
- Abdominal fat linked to cardiovascular disease
- Higher diabetes and metabolic syndrome risk
- More accurate than BMI for some populations
